The innovative method of cleansing the blood called apheresis, used in our clinic, is a treatment similar to a dialysis. By the apharesis, various components can be separated from the patient’s blood by an “extra-corporal” cycle (meaning it takes place outside of the patient’s body) using special membrane plasma separation. Toxic substances, harmful proteins and metabolic residues can selectively be eliminated from the body, yielding positive therapeutic results.
By means of the specialised cleansing of the plasma, harmful substances are eliminated from the patient’s blood, enabling the body to restore its healthy balance and functioning of the various bodily processes. With this method, the causes of various clinical pictures related to the following diseases can be treated:
- Rheumatic diseases
- Disorders of the fat metabolism
- Chronic and acute diseases of the immunesysteme
- Borreliosis
- Autoimmune diseases
- Contamination from heavy-metals
The apheresis allows for two treatment options. Depending on the clinical indication, one of the two methods is selected for therapy. During a specific plasma apheresis which is used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases for example, plasma is being separated from the blood-cells. The separated plasma is then run through special filters for plasma separation that selectively retain the pathogenic substances and toxins. The cleansed plasma is returned to the patient’s body by a vein-catheter. The second method is the unspecific plasma apheresis. In this case, the previously separated plasma gained from the extra-corporal cycle is discarded and instead a complex nutrient solution is injected.
Apheresis is a very gentle therapy, putting little strain on the patient, therefore being tolerated very well. Normally, a noteworthy reduction of electrolytes and important antibodies does not occur.
